A disappointingly poor first half let down Girton as the same team kicked off this weeks game that started last week’s game. An unusual occurrence this season but the consistency of team members did not stop a glaringly poor performance. Generally the whole team were unsure when receiving, passing, tacking or heading. The ball bounced around and never seemed to be under control. Milton on the other hand penetrated and probed the defence with simple diagonal balls with straight runs, turning the GUFC back four who were often exposed. 2 lapses of concentration gifted Milton two chances and they didn’t fail to convert. 0-2 half time.
Half time chat was conducted and the kick off taken, only for Milton to snatch an early worldy to make it 0-3. Some quick changes were made soon after – not picking anyone off and out the game more to simply make changes to try and get a performance out of the team. Recent absentees Hall, Pattern and Waller came on to make an impact along with a significant formation change to bring more fight and energy into the game.
Fight and energy did indeed arrive but Girton couldn’t quite take their chances. Milton were denied by an offside call highlighted by linesman and initially suspected by the referee much to their annoyance and also the post later on. Danny Alison got a great goal back to make it 1-3.
Girton continued to battle on causing more problems for Milton than the first half. A late challenge on Abu meant a Milton player had to go – the referee had no choice. Free kick was collected by the keeper without fuss. More attacking and pressure from Girton saw more opportunities come and go – not quite making the clinical finishes seen in previous matches. After hitting the post and crossbar and some good saves by the Milton keeper it was looking doubtful if they could get back into the game.
1-3 it ended. A glimmer of hope in the second half not taken and overall Milton deserved the points.
Girton host Hemmingfords United next week on the 14th March then the Semi Final of the cup verses Fulbourne on the 21st March.
Training 7:30pm again on Wednesday.
