A last minute sucker punch from Somersham Town meant that Girton UTD left the village feeling like they had lost the game. In all honesty we played some good football but suffered at the death after a long Stoke like throw-in into the box.
Girton got off to a great start when after only a couple of minutes Deano broke through the Somersham back line and produced a lovely little strike across the goalkeeper into the opposite corner. After the goal we continued to press Somersham high up the pitch and our shape was solid throughout the team. In fairness, if we were a bit better with our final ball in their final third we could have gone in at half time 2 or 3 goals to the good but this wasn’t to be. Somersham had their moments in the first half but they only really looked like troubling us from set pieces into the box.
Half time came and Malcolm made some changes to the midfield so we could start the second half with fresh legs to keep the intensity high. The first 10 minutes were a little slow, with both teams just trying to find space to get the ball into but Somersham manage to get onto the front foot and push Girton back with their long diagonal balls that they were looking to play the entire game. Girton found themselves getting deeper as time ebbed away and a few free kicks into the Girton box were starting to cause problems but on the whole we defended them very well. Just as it looked like Girton would see out the game and take the 1-0 win, the referee appeared to find at least 6 minutes injury time from somewhere! Unfortunately in the very last 30 seconds of this phantom time, Somersham put on a sub that had a monster throw on him! Low and behold the ball found it’s way into the Girton 6 yard box and onto a Somersham head and into the back of the net. It was a bitter blow! After a couple of bookings later for dissent and a re-taken centre, the ref blew for full time.
Although it’s a bitter pill to swallow, Girton can take many positives from the game. Our intensity and shape were spot on and we defended very well as a team, dealing with the majority of things thrown at us. If we can improve our final ball and composure in and around the box I’m sure we’ll be a threat against any time in this league.
Up next Soham United away on Saturday!
